Co-Managed IT Services
Your IT person is good. That’s not the problem. The problem is that “IT department” now means help desk, network engineering, security operations, compliance documentation, vendor management, and project delivery — and you employ one or two people.
Co-managed IT splits the load on your terms. Your team keeps the work they’re best at and closest to; we bring enterprise tooling, a 24/7 security stack, deep-bench expertise, and coverage that doesn’t take vacation.
What does co-managed IT include?
Every co-managed relationship is scoped to fit — that’s the point — but the building blocks are:
- Enterprise tooling your team drives — our monitoring, patching, and management platform deployed across your environment, with your team working alongside ours in it. Tooling alone would cost you more than the partnership.
- The 24/7 managed security stack — EDR, identity threat detection, and SOC coverage your team can’t staff internally at any reasonable cost.
- Escalation depth — network engineers, cloud specialists, and security consultants on call when a problem outgrows one person’s week. No more being the only person who can fix it.
- After-hours and absence coverage — vacations, illness, turnover, 2 a.m. outages. The org chart stops depending on one phone.
- Project muscle — migrations, server upgrades, and rollouts delivered together, so projects stop dying behind the ticket queue.
- Compliance support — policies, evidence, and audit preparation, so your team isn’t learning CJIS or HIPAA documentation on deadline.
Who co-managed IT is for
- The one-person IT department — a capable generalist supporting a whole organization, who needs depth behind them and a real vacation
- Small internal teams — solid on daily support, stretched on security, cloud architecture, or the project backlog
- IT directors — who want to spend their hires on business-facing work and buy commodity coverage instead of staffing it
- Municipalities and school-adjacent orgs — where one generalist supports police, utilities, courts, and the clerk — and CJIS still applies to all of it
How we split the work
There are three common ways that we split the work with managed IT services:
You take frontline, we take the backbone
Your team handles user support and day-to-day requests; we run monitoring, patching, security, backups, and infrastructure behind them.
We take frontline, you take strategy
Our help desk absorbs the ticket volume; your IT leader focuses on applications, projects, and the business — with our engineers as their bench.
Specialty carve-out
Your team runs IT; we run security — the 24/7 stack, compliance program, and incident response that no small team can credibly self-host.
The split is written down, with clear ownership and escalation paths — so nothing falls between two chairs, and nobody wonders whose job it was.
The part your IT person is worried about
Let’s say it plainly: co-managed IT works when the internal team wants it to. So we build for that. Your team gets access to our tooling and our engineers. Most internal IT folks tell us the partnership is the best professional development they’ve had. We don’t compete for their job; we’re the reason they stop working nights. And when we meet with your leadership, your IT lead is in the room, presenting wins as theirs. Because they are.
What we look for in a co-managed IT assessment
- Where your team’s time actually goes — usually 70% firefighting that tooling and patching discipline would eliminate
- Single points of failure: systems only one person understands, credentials only one person holds
- Security layers a small team can’t realistically watch (identity monitoring, log review, overnight alerts)
- The project backlog — what’s been "next quarter" for six quarters
- Documentation gaps that turn every absence into an emergency
Schedule a co-managed IT assessment
Your IT team shouldn’t be one resignation away from crisis. Schedule a conversation, bring your IT lead, and we’ll map where a partnership would actually help and where you genuinely don’t need us.
Frequently Asked Questions About Co-Managed IT Services
Is co-managed IT the first step toward replacing our IT staff?
No — and we put that in writing in how the agreement is scoped. Co-managed clients hire us to make their internal team more effective, and our incentive is a healthy long-term partnership, not a takeover. Where clients do eventually restructure, it’s their decision on their timeline — usually because a retirement or resignation changed the math.
How is co-managed priced?
Like our fully managed services: a flat monthly rate, scoped to the responsibilities we carry — typically per user or per device for the covered layers. You’re not paying twice for what your team already does; you’re paying once for what it can’t.
Can our IT staff use your tools directly?
Yes. Shared visibility is the whole model: your team works in the same monitoring, ticketing, and documentation platforms our engineers use, with access scoped to your environment. Two teams, one pane of glass.
What happens when there’s a major incident?
We respond together, with roles agreed in advance. Your team brings environment knowledge; we bring the 24/7 SOC, incident response experience, and extra hands. Managed and co-managed clients get priority response and preferred incident-response rates. → /cybersecurity/incident-response
Our IT manager is skeptical. Will you talk to them directly?
Please put them first in line. The best co-managed relationships start with the internal team interrogating us — our tooling, our escalation paths, our references from other IT leads we work alongside. Skepticism is a sign they take the environment seriously. We like that in a partner.
